When was the last time you felt truly happy? Not only with your life but with yourself too? Now pause for a few moments …
What answer or answers come to mind?
I want you to seriously think about this. This is an important exercise. If you have a pen and paper handy, write your answer/s down.
My answer is when I was in Ghana for three months recently. Every single day there I felt truly happy. Whether I was by myself, or with friends or family. The reason is because I saw my life for what it truly is. A gift. An opportunity to live a life that is authentically my own.
Why Ghana?
I grew up in Australia, a country with a legacy of settler colonialism. As a person with Ghanaian heritage, I grew up physically but not spiritually far from my Ghanaian roots.
At 19, I visited Ghana for the first time. A homecoming after the arduous adolescent years of asking the common but important questions like:
who am I?
where do I belong?
Subsequent travel from this first trip to Ghana culminated in my most recent return which I began talking about at the beginning of this post. This time in Ghana, and 5 years on from my first trip, I found myself asking a different set of questions:
what life do I want to live?
how can I create this life?
Why the name adjoainghana?
I belong to the Akan ethnic group of Ghana which has a system of naming children based on the day they were born. Consequently, my given birth name is Adjoa, given to a female born on Monday.
And the “inghana” part? Well it was in Ghana that I was challenged to start living a more authentic life.
Why this platform?
I love the feeling of connecting with community around a shared purpose.
During my years as an undergrad, I did this through starting the first Africa-focused society at my university. Later, I did this through leading a mentoring program for diverse youth in schools within local communities in Western Sydney, Australia.
Then, in early 2023, I started my adjoainghana Instagram account to share my Ghana travel experiences with my friends. As much as I wanted to provide entertainment, I also wanted to send a deeper message. A message that said this is the life I’m choosing to live and I hope it inspires you to live a life that is true to you too.
I now feel called to spread this message wider, which is why I have decided to create this online community.
